New epidermal strain sensors based on magnetic κ-carrageenan-containing hydrogels

Hydrogel-based-strain sensors are applied to monitor human motions helping to diagnose movement diseases. The smartness of hydrogels adds new features to the corresponding sensors that improve their performance . We previously prepared electrical conductive hydrogels using Fe3O4 nanoparticles and κ-carrageenan, representing temperature-sensitive shape memory . The electrical conductivity was created only with carrageenan and acrylic acid (no additional salt was added). The hydrogels (as tensile strain sensors) showed strong and reproducible signals during 500 stretching and shortening cycles. Herein, the performance of the hydrogels in human motion monitoring was investigated. Results showed strong signals in the knee, wrist, and finger movements. This consequence was extraordinary, considering the lack of additional salt in the hydrogel composition.
