The preparation of inclusion complex of menthol in β-cyclodextrin

Cyclodextrins (CD) are cyclical oligosaccharides that are derived from starch. The spatial orientation of the glucopyranose units in β-CD molecules forms a truncated cone with a hydrophobic interior space and a hydrophilic exterior surface [1]. The essential oils and terpenoids compounds like menthol are known as hydrophobic compounds. In recent years, the encapsulation techniques improve the water solubility of these compounds. β-CD derivatives such as methylated β-CD are a class of hosts for this propose [2,3]. In the present study, we have investigated the preparation of menthol encapsulation in β -CD. The FT-IR technique was run to endorse the preparation of menthol/β-CD. Method: the co-precipitation method was used to prepare the inclusion complex of menthol/β-CD [4]. A hydroalcoholic solution of β-CD was prepared by dissolving of β-CD (1 g) in 10 mL water:ethanol (1:1). Then, 2 ml of menthol was added to β-CD solution. The mixture was electromagnetically stirred at 55°C for 30 minutes, and then followed by continuous stirring for 4 hours at room temperature. The samples were then kept at 4°C for 12 hours. Finally, the formed precipitate was separated through vacuum filtration and was dried in an oven at 50°C for 24 hours. Figure 1 shows the FT-IR spectra of β-CD, menthol, and menthol/β-CD complex. The similarity of the spectrum of menthol/β-CD to those of β-CD and menthol confirm the preparation of the inclusion complex of menthol/β-CD successfully.
