چکیده مقاله :
Oliveria decumbens, an annual herb, belongs to the Apiaceae family and distributes in Syria, south-east Anatolia, Iraq, and Iran. In this study, the influence of acid pre-treatment prior to hydrodistillation on the yield and antioxidant activity of the O. decumbens essential oil was investigated. Hydro-distillation method was used for isolating the essential oils from the air-dried powdered flowers (10 g) which was treated with acid solution. Then, yield and antioxidant activity of the essential oils were calculated. The obtained results indicated that the pre-treatment with high acid concentration (0.6 mM HCl) increased essential oil yield from 5.0 to 7.16%, compared to the conventional method. Acid solution could hydrolyze the cell wall and then releases secondary metabolites out of the cells. Also, thymol and carvacrol were the major constituent with up to 60% obtained through both methods, and the acid pre-treatment could not change the amount of them, significantly. However, no significant changes were observed in the antioxidant property of the essential oil. Therefore, it may be suggested that, if high yield is required, the O. decumbens flowers could be distilled from acid medium.
