Remediation of wastewater containing 4-nitrophenol by reduction to 4-aminophenol using gold nanoparticles decorated on mesoporous carbon

Gold nanoparticles decorated mesoporous carbon (Au@MC) was synthesized by carbonization of egg biomass, followed by decorating Au nanoparticles by reduction of Au(III) salts using hydrazine. Synthesized Au@MC was characterized using XRD, SEM, TEM, EDS, and BET analysis, revealing the successful decoration of Au nanoparticles on the surface of mesoporous carbon. Au@MC exhibited high catalytic activity for the remediation of 4-nitrophenol contaminant from wastewater by reduction to 4-aminophenol. Reusability test indicated that the recycled catalyst can be reused for five runs without considerable changes in the catalytic activity.
