Mannich-mediated amination of sulfated Kraft lignin: A Brønsted acid catalyst for the synthesis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural from fructose

One of the most important materials which attracted much consideration is 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF). The 5-HMF is a multifunctional material which has many applications in different industries [1,2]. In this study, we synthesized 5-HMF using aminated lignin functionalized SO3H as an efficient Brønsted acid catalyst. The catalyst was prepared via Mannich reaction of 5-amino-1H-tetrazole with Kraft lignin following functionalized by chlorosulfonic acid (Mani-Tet-SO3H) and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), and Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The catalyst was applied for the synthesis of 5-HMF from fructose via an acid hydrolysis reaction (Scheme 1). Finally, the catalyst can be recycled and reused for 4 times without significant loss of in its performance.
