Synthesis of treacetin by glycerol acetylation using acidic catalyst and ethyl acetate as an entrainer

Glycerol is a triol and up to its three hydroxyl groups can be functionalized [1]. Triacetin is a triglyceride obtained by acetylation of the three hydroxyl groups of glycerol. Esterification of glycerol with acetic acid in the presence of ethyl acetate as an entrainer was performed over p-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA) as acidic catalyst in a batch reactor (Scheme). Ethyl acetate continuously removed the reaction water, thus the chemical equilibrium was effectively shifted; the selectivity for the most desired product triacetin was dramatically increased [2]. The influence of reaction conditions such as reaction time, acetic acid: glycerol molar ratio and catalyst amount were investigated. The results showed that the more than 99% selectivity to triacetin at complete glycerol conversion was obtained. Scheme: Reaction scheme of glycerol acetylation.
