EXTRACTION AND PURIFICATION OF PHENOLIC COMPOUNDS FROM POMEGRANATE HUSK

چکیده مقاله :
Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) fruits are widely cultivated and consumed in Iran. There are some by-products in pomegranate processing industries, among which pomegranate husk can be mentioned. Pomegranate husk is a source of hydrolysable tannins called ellagitannins. Considering the low price of the raw material of this extraction and the large amount of this by-product, this will be a cost-effective practice. This article presents different methods for extraction and purification of ellagitannins such as punicalin and punicalagin, ellagic acid and phenolic acids mostly hydroxy benzoic acids. Due to the fact that ellagitannins show the potential of anti-cancer, anti-arteriosclerosis and antioxidant properties, these extracts are very suitable and affordable for the preparation of medicines and food supplements. In this way, we can directly extract phytochemicals from available and cheap sources and use them in medicines and food supplements that prevent common diseases.
