[60]Fullerene-Based Pd(0) complexes of phosphorus ylide as efficient heterogeneous nano-catalyst for Suzuki reaction

In the recent years, functionalization of fullerenes C60 and investigation of their new properties, in particular biological, catalytic and reactivity studies of these compounds have attracted the attention of academic researchers [1]. During the last three decades, different palladium-fullerene complexes have been developed extensively as efficient nano-catalysts for a variety of reactions due to their unique nanostructures and higher surface area than traditional Pd-based catalysts [2–4]. This work reports the synthesis and catalytic properties of new mono- and bidentate Pd(0)-[60] fullerene complexes, prepared by reaction of α-keto stabilized phosphorus ylides [Ph2P(CH2)nPPh2C(H)C(O)C6H4-m-OMe] (n=1, (Y1); n=2, (Y2)) C60 and Pd(dba)2 (dibenzylideneacetone(dba)). The synthesized complexes exhibit different structures, including P,C-chelated [(η2-C60)Pd(κ2-Y1)] (1) and P-coordinated [(η2-C60)Pd(Y2)2] (2) complexes. These complexes have been fully characterized by spectroscopic methods and other conventional techniques such as IR, UV-Vis, SEM and TEM analyses. Also, a comparison between the catalytic activity of Pd complexes 1 and 2 was evaluated in the Suzuki reaction of various aryl halides with phenylboronic acid. (Scheme)
