Electrochemical study of the Acetaminophen and Pomegranate Extract Interaction

In this research, electrochemical techniques were used to investigate the reaction mechanisms of acetaminophen oxidation and its interactions with pomegranate extract. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and coulometry provided direct, quantitative analysis of the redox behavior of acetaminophen and its corresponding products [1]. Electrosynthesis can also be a powerful tool in revealing the mechanisms of compounds in chemistry. By using electricity to starting and continuing chemical reactions, researchers can gain insights into the step-by-step processes involved in the formation of compounds. This techniques allow to precise control over reaction conditions and can provide valuable information about reaction intermediates and reaction pathways [2]. Changes in cathodic and anodic peak currents of CV in the presence of pomegranate extract showed that the extract interacts with N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI), leading to its subsequent chemical pathways and mechanisms. Our electrochemical analysis provides valuable mechanistic information on the multistep process of acetaminophen and pomegranate extract reactions that is difficult to obtain through traditional methods. This information can be used to identify antidotal like pomegranate extracts that can mitigate acetaminophen toxicity. Overall, our study demonstrates the advantages of electrochemical techniques to identify the reaction mechanisms for screening plant extracts as therapeutic alternatives for acetaminophen poisoning.
