Salicylaldehydes in multicomponent reactions: Synthesis of new heterocycles

Salicylaldehydes, which have one aldehyde and one phenolic functional group, show a different behaviour and lead to compounds with different structures in comparison to other aromatic aldehydes in certain multicomponent reactions (MCRs) [1-2]. In this study, salicylaldehydes with different substitutions as the aldehyde component in the Strecker and Groebke-Blackburn-Bienayme (GBB) 3-component reactions (3CR) were investigated in the absence of the any catalyst. The results showed that the Strecker reaction with salicylaldehydes resulting the benzofuro[2,3-b]pyrazin-2(1H)-ones and in the GBB-3CR salicylaldehyde substitution plays an effective role in the reaction process. Salicylaldehydes with Br and Cl substitution groups led to a pseudo four-components reaction, producing 4H-1,3-benzodioxine-4,4-dicarboxamides. Conversely, salicylaldehydes with NO2 substitution participated in the GBB-3CR and produced 2-(3-aminoimidazo[1,2-a]pyridin-2-yl)phenols (Scheme).
