Preparation of Regenerated Cellulose film using Green Organic Solvents

Cellulose is the most abundant natural polymer in nature and it is currently one of the most promising polymeric resources. Cellulose has to be regenerated prior to use. However, cellulose regeneration is difficult to achieve and most of conventional cellulose solvents have some drawbacks such as toxicity, volatility, side reactions and high cost. Recently, Ionic liquids have been developed as organic green cellulose solvents. In this research, mixture of three kind of ionic liquid were used to dissolve cellulose in one step. High percentage of cellulose could be dissolved by using this method which is effect on regenerated cellulose structure and properties. Morphological properties of produced regenerated cellulose film were studied. FTIR results indicated that crystal transformation of cellulose I to cellulose II had occurred during regeneration which is evidence of complete dissolution of cellulose during regeneration. The SEM micrographs showed that the preparation methods used in this research was suitable for the preparation of a regenerated cellulose dense and homogenous structure which is due to the appropriate preparation method as well as the high cellulose concentration.
