The study of hydrophobicity-plugging synergistic effect on the catalytic performance of sulfonic acid based bifunctional periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMOs) in Esterification reaction

In this report, we decide to study the catalysis of sulfonic acids on supports with and without plugs on bifunctional periodic mesoporous organosilicas in esterification reactions. Since water is the product in the esterification reaction and sulfonic acid is poisoned in addition to water, control of the hydrophobicity of the mesochannels is very important. Considering the role of IL in the stability of the catalysts and the amphiphilic character near the hydrophobic ethane and/or phenyl groups and the hydrophilic plugs, we expect these materials to have good performance in the esterification reaction. Moreover, the counterion of IL can be replaced by HSO4- to achieve a synergistic effect with the sulfonic acid catalyst (Table 1).
