Synthesis and evaluation of thermal stability of melamine dinitrate explosive

Considering the role of common high-energy materials such as ammonium nitrate in civil blasting applications, it is valuable to produce materials with higher explosive strength and higher thermal stability than ammonium nitrate. Melamine, 2,4,6-triamino-1,3,5-triazine, is a white, odorless, crystalline substance with a melting point of 345 oC, which is produced in our country on a large scale. Melamine dinitrate (MDN) is a thermally stable salt of melamine and nitric acid that maintains its thermal stability at a temperature of about 330 oC for at least 48 hours [1-2]. In this research, the heat resistant MDN explosive was prepared using the reaction of melamine in nitric acid at a temperature of 95-100 °C with an efficiency near to 87.0% . Also, the main factors affecting on the quality of process were optimized, and some necessary quantitative and qualitative analyses, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR), and elemental analysis were performed to identify and confirm the quality of the product. Also, the degree of stability of the MDN in accelerated aging conditions, and its thermal decomposition was evaluated by thermogravimetric (TGA) method. The results showed that the nitrogen element content of MDN is near to 44.24%, and the substance begins to decompose in the temperature range of 248.77 oC to of 329.12 oC (see Scheme).
