In recent years, halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) have garnered significant attention due to their unique properties and wide applications in various fields. One of the key advantages of HNTs is their ability to be modified and functionalized, allowing for the incorporation of different nanoparticles to enhance their properties and create novel nanocomposites. In this study, a new bio-based nanocomposite was designed based on the modification of magnetic halloysite with arginine. The combination of HNTs and Fe3O4 nanoparticles created a unique platform for the catalyst, which enabled easy separation and recycling of the catalyst and also improved the catalytic performance. Various analyzes were performed to confirm the formation of the catalyst. After that, it was tested as a Lewis acid catalyst for the multicomponent one-pot synthesis of spirooxindole. Among the spiro compounds, spirooxindoles have gained significant attention due to their unique structural array and highly pronounced pharmacological activity. Effective parameters such as catalyst amount, temperature and reaction time were optimized. The catalyst was also reusable and could be reused up to five times. Therefore, the synthesis of spirooxindoles has become a topic of interest for researchers.
