Effect of Hydrogenation on mechanical properties of HTPB-based polyurethanes

Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene double bonds (HTPB) are susceptible to modification processes, including hydrogenation, due to their high reactivity. Hydrogenation of HTPB strongly affects the microstructure and consequently, the mechanical properties of polyurethanes based on this prepolymer, so partial hydrogenation is a useful tool to adjust the mechanical properties of HTPB-based polyurethanes. In this article, an attempt has been made to comprehensively explain the effect of HTPB hydrogenation on the mechanical properties of polyurethanes based on this prepolymer. The results show that the hydrogenation of HTPB generally increases the tensile strength, initial modulus, and hardness of polyurethanes based on this prepolymer and slightly reduces the elongation.
